Momma Says...

July 1, 2009

I still don't like her.

Pioneer Woman, that is.

Since Chase has decided he's in a food rut, I put on my big girl panties & headed over to her website to dig through her recipes. I figured since it was for Chase, I could ignore everything about her that annoys me & just go straight for the food.

{A small side note: My husband thinks he's in a food rut now? Perhaps he'd like to keep complaining about it & then I'll show him what a real "rut" is when he's forced to eat PB&J for days on end, while my apron hangs in the pantry, nice & clean.}

Now. Were where we? Oh yes. The recipes I stole from PW & slightly modified. Steak bites & crash-hot potatoes. Along with sauteed zucchini & homemade potato bread.

And Chase promptly apologized for ever using the word rut. My secret? Butter. And lots of it.

Now, if PW could just quit babbling & get to the fracking point, she'd be goodtolerable.

In other boringly domestic news, I've been dinking around with my laundry detergent "recipe". We have a farmer's market here every weekend & one of the vendors sells handmade soaps. On a whim I decided to pick up a few bars from her "reject" pile to try out in my upcoming batch of soap & let me tell you. Spending the extra money on the soap was worth it.

The detergent smells uhhhh-may-zing. The soap isn't overly scented but just enough so that I didn't put any essential oil in. Perhaps it's just my imagination (although we all know I'm pretending it isn't) but I think the kids' skin has cleared up even more.

I also found that I like my detergent with a little more Borax than the original recipe called for. I usually do about a 2:1 ratio rather than a 1:1. Since it's a booster & a whitener, I've been able completely cut out OxiClean. You can also make a little paste with it & apply directly to spots before washing, which has eliminated the need for any kind of spot treatment products.

I played around with the amount of detergent I used in each wash, too, after reading a recipe on another blogger's site. When I started out using my homemade detergent, I was using only 2Tbs (or 1/8C) per load, as recommended by the original recipe I'd found. Her variation called for 1/4C if you had hard water. I've found that if I toss in a really dirty load of clothes
(or Chase's clothes after a softball game) & use 1/4C of soap, the clothes come out clean & fresh smelling & don't require an extra wash like they sometimes did in the past, with commercial detergent.

So there you have it. Things have been so exciting around here lately I've been reduced to posting pictures of what I eat & debating the merits of an 1/8C of laundry detergent vs. a 1/4C.

I'm sorry.

(also? WTH Blogger. I've tried to adjust my font size about 09283 times & you still won't save my changes. Wench.)

I was wondering why it was getting tinier and tinier. Tip: Cut whatever you want to be small, click within normal sized text, hit the spacebar, back space, click at the end and start typing in normal sized font again and then paste in the small text. Total pain, but that's what I have to do when I use a photobucket link.

Also, she offers printable recipes so you don't have to do the step by step AND I LOVE HER. So take that!

And I was sad to see I was totally cut out of your bloggy life today when I logged in to blogger and now I have to wait for the feeder to pick up your latest post and can't just click view blog anymore.

I LOVE PW!! Sorry you don't ;) She is where I started in the whole blogging world.

Since I am a dieter or in a weight loss program her food isn't for me BUT my hubby made her strawberry shortcake not long ago and it was THE BEST EVER!!

Anyway, your blog is great. :)

Ok! You know I just got on your Laundry Soap making band-wagon a month or so ago! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! Now, I've read up on it. I have even started putting white vinegar in my downy ball (rather than fabric softener.) And I made the "homemade" dryer sheets. They are AWESOME! I feel like I am saving SO much money! OH YEAH, and I haven't even FOUND any "essential oils" to try and put in the laundry soap!
Thanks again!

My little one is in the same food rut. Pretty much every day she wants a grilled cheese...and all the things she loved she now hates...what's up with that?! Do they do this on purpose to remind us that we don't in fact have this whole parenting thing down like we thought we did?

That plate of food is making me drool and it's only 7AM here. Yum.

I've only checked out PW once but I don't get the appeal so I moved on. Yay for laundry soap. I've never tried it since we have a high efficiency washer and I don't want to break him. The washer and dryer's names are R2 and D2 and I LOVE them.

I am so excited to hear that you tried the soaps and it worked AND smelled great!! I'm finally about to finish off my humango bottle of detergent, so I'm ready to make my first batch! I might be emailing you with questions.

I need to head to the Farmer's Market Sat. first. What scent did you get?!?

I have checked out this PW before and wasn't to enthralled. Entertained me for a bit, but I haven't been back. I cook A LOT out of a little cookbook called "Whole Foods for the Whole Family". It is geared towards busy family life and healthy eating. It has great tips about what to stock a pantry with, what meals freeze well, how to cut a whole chicken up and it has variations on most recipes (dairy free, substitutions, etc...)!

I might have to try the homemade laundry soap!! I use a Tide or Arm and Hammer one now (whatever is on sale when I need more) and I actually use about half what they suggest I use and have not noticed any problems with clothes smelling/looking/feeling clean. I have made the typical box last almost twice as long as I used to.
